About Me

ABOUT ME

Hey, I'm Kelly! Thanks for coming to my website.

I am a senior at Stanford University passionate about using technology to help others and produce creative solutions to our world's problems.

I love engineering and making new things. I consider myself technically-minded, yet artistically-inclined. The performing arts stole my heart over a decade ago. Since then, I have trained in singing and dancing, was a lead in a movie, and starred in a national tour. These experiences sharpened my communication skills and taught me the importance of collaboration and creativity.

I have a broad range of interests, from space travel and national security to biomechanics and public policy. If you're interested, let's talk!

EDUCATION

Stanford University

Stanford, CA

Mechanical Engineering, B.S.

Concentration: Dynamic Systems & Controls

GPA: 3.84/4.00

Class: 2020

In addition to acquiring a foundation of solid mechanics, thermofluids, and manufacturing, I have developed critical skills such as 3D-modeling, MATLAB, rapid prototyping, and applying the iterative design process.

Mechanical Engineering has taught me how to approach problems creatively and develop effective and efficient solutions. This valuable mindset is applicable in every field.

International Security Studies Honors Program

This highly competitive, interdisciplinary program provided me the remarkable opportunity to spend eleven days in Washington, D.C. to interact with numerous facets of the world of public policy and national security. I am writing a substantial thesis about the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty and the motivations behind Russia's development of a noncompliant missile system.

Engineering & Medicine Study Abroad Seminar

Germany, Austria, Switzerland

I participated in a Neurobiological Practical Course in the Department of Otolaryngology at the University of Tübingen. The course consisted of lectures, tutorials, a live surgery, and practical laboratory work with notable faculty. Additionally, I toured several major medical device companies and engaged with the leaders of the ENT device industry.

EXPERIENCE

Northrop Grumman

Redondo Beach, CA

Handsmith

Roanoke, VA

Vehicle Engineering Intern, 2019

Stress Analysis, Space Structures

I received the opportunity to contribute to three projects within the Aerospace Systems sector: Ontario, Enhanced Polar System, and Scalable Composite Robotic Additive Manufacturing (SCRAM). I worked as a stress analyst of space structures. I learned how to use FEMAP and NASTRAN while completing Finite Element Analysis coupon and trade studies.

Vehicle Engineering Intern, 2018

Composite Structures Design

I worked as a Structural Design engineer on Engineering Building Block, a composites R&D program. I used NX10 and FiberSim as I designed and developed test articles of composite joints and structures. My responsibilities included producing detailed CAD models, drawings, and flat patterns to enable Manufacturing to fabricate design concepts. Other assignments were focused on analysis, testing, and manufacturing.

Engineering Intern, 2017

I provided engineering support to Handsmith, a non-profit organization creating affordable 3D-printed bionic prostheses. My main responsibility was assembling the mechanical and electrical components of myoelectric prosthetic hands. Power tools, hand tools, and a soldering iron were required to construct the robotic fingers and hands. I suggested several helpful design improvements and building techniques that will be integrated into future hands. I learned how to program the hand using a Teensy 3.2 Microcontroller and Arduino software and operate a Formlabs Form 2 SLA 3D Printer

Elegant, hand-crafted metal planters

Metal bending, brazing, and powder-coating techniques were used during the manufacturing of these artistic planters.

Amphibious Robot

My team and I were tasked with creating an amphibious, autonomous robot from low-cost materials. It needed to swim through water, climb up a ramp, and clamber over obstacles.

Reefing Parachute Recovery System

This project combined a skirt cord, slider, and pyrotechnic cutter mechanism with the goal to de-reef a parachute at a desired altitude.

Stanford Student Space Initiative, Team Rockets, 2017-2018

Piezoelectric Crystal Tree

Using rainwater to produce electricity

Through several phases of testing and research, I worked to improve the efficiency of a "tree" composed of piezoelectric crystals. These devices converted the kinetic energy of falling rainwater into electrical energy.
